Images Missing After a Database Restore? Re-Register Your Uploads

You rolled your site back to fix a problem, and the fix worked. But now pages show gaps where pictures used to be, and the Media Library is missing items you uploaded last week. If you have images missing after database restore, the cause is simple, and in most cases you can repair it without starting over.

Images Missing After a Database Restore? Re-Register Your Uploads

Why a database restore removes images

A backup of your database holds the media records as they were on the day of the backup. Files you uploaded after that day have no record in it. When you restore the database, WordPress goes back in time and forgets those uploads. The image files may still be on the server, but the library has no entry for them.

The reverse can also happen. If you restore the files but not the database, the files exist, and the records are the ones that are old. Either way, the two get out of step.

Step 1: Work out which part you restored

Ask yourself three quick questions.

  1. Did the restore include only the database, or files and database?
  2. What is the date of the backup?
  3. Which uploads were added after that date?

If only the database was restored, files uploaded after the backup date should still be in wp-content/uploads. That is good news.

Step 2: Check the uploads folder

Connect by FTP or the file manager and open the folders for the months after your backup date. If the images are there, you can recover them. If they are not, your restore tool may have also replaced the files, and you will need a more recent file backup.

Step 3: Take a safety copy now

Before you try any repair, download the uploads folder or take a fresh backup. This protects you from a second mistake. The WordPress documentation on WordPress backups explains what a full backup should include.

Step 4: Re-register the missing uploads

This step re-creates the library entries for files that exist on disk.

  1. Install Media Library Recovery Free.
  2. Go to Media > Media Recovery.
  3. Use the Media Explorer to find files from the missing period.
  4. Select up to 10 images at a time and click recover.
  5. Open Media > Library to check the result.

If you have hundreds of files, Media Library Recovery Pro has no file limit and works with video, audio, and documents. Our help article on advanced search and quick recovery filters explains how to find files by date and type.

Step 5: Re-attach images to your posts

Recovering the library entries makes the files available again. Posts that point to the same file address will show the image again at once. But some details may not return:

  • Alt text and captions that lived only in the lost records
  • Featured image links on posts
  • Image attribution to the original post

Check your most important pages, such as the homepage and best-selling products. Re-select the featured image where needed. For a wider look at this repair, read our guide to rebuilding the WordPress media database.

What if the files are missing too?

If neither the library nor the folder has your images, restore the missing files from another source.

  • A file backup from your host or backup plugin
  • A copy of the site on staging or an old server
  • Images saved on your computer from the original upload

Put them in the right folders, then run the recovery step.

How to restore safely next time

  • Restore files and database from the same backup point.
  • Test on a staging site before restoring on the live site.
  • Export new content before a rollback, so you can add it back.
  • Keep a separate uploads backup. Our help article on backing up your uploads folder shows how.

Images missing after database restore: common questions

Why did only some images disappear?

Only the uploads made after the backup date lost their records. Older images were in the backup and came back with it.

Should I restore the database again with a newer backup?

Only if the newer backup is complete and tested. Otherwise you risk a second rollback. Re-registering the files is safer.

Will my posts show the images again?

Posts that store the file address show the image once the file is reachable. Featured images and attachments may need to be selected again.

How do I prevent this in future?

Restore files and database from the same backup point, and keep a separate uploads backup so newer files are never lost.

Conclusion

When you notice images missing after database restore, do not panic. The files are often still on the server, and only the records are gone. Check the folder, make a safety copy, then re-register the uploads.

Start with the free plugin and see which files come back first.
