WordPress Deleted Image Still Showing? Here Is Why and How to Fix It

You deleted an image from the Media Library, yet it still appears on a page, or its address still opens in the browser. It feels like a bug, but it is not. In most cases, a WordPress deleted image still showing comes down to five clear causes. This guide explains each one and how to deal with it.

WordPress Deleted Image Still Showing? Here Is Why and How to Fix It

What happens when you delete an image

When you remove an item from the Media Library, WordPress deletes the database entry. If media trash is not enabled, it also deletes the file and its resized copies from wp-content/uploads. Posts and pages that used the image are not edited. They keep the stored address, so the page can still ask for a file that is now gone, or one that something else is still serving.

Cause 1: A cached copy of the page

This is the most common reason. Your browser, a caching plugin, your host, or a CDN may still hold the old page and the old image. The file may truly be gone, while a copy remains in cache.

  • Hard refresh the page with Ctrl+F5.
  • Open the page in a private window.
  • Purge your caching plugin, host cache, and CDN.

If the image disappears after a purge, you have found the cause.

Cause 2: The image is hard-coded in the content

If you inserted the image in a post or builder page, the address is saved in that content. Deleting the Media Library entry does not change the page. Edit the page and remove the block, or replace the image. You can search your content for the file name to find every page that uses it.

Cause 3: The file is still on the server

Sometimes only the database entry is removed. The file stays in the uploads folder, so its address still works. This happens after a database restore, a failed deletion, or a plugin that skips file cleanup. Check the folder through FTP or your file manager. If the file is there, you can delete it by hand, or bring it back into the library.

Cause 4: Other image sizes still exist

WordPress creates several sizes for each upload, such as thumbnail and medium. A deleted original can leave resized copies behind if the cleanup was interrupted. Search the folder for the file name and delete the leftovers, if you no longer need them.

Cause 5: The image is served from somewhere else

If you use a CDN, an image optimization service, or an offloading plugin, the file may live on another server. Deleting it in WordPress may not remove it there. Check the settings of that service and remove or purge the file from its dashboard.

What if you deleted it by mistake?

If the deleted image is still on your server, you can recover it. A recovery plugin scans your uploads folder and re-adds files that are missing from the library. Our guide on how to restore deleted images in WordPress compares three methods. You can also try Media Library Recovery Free, which recovers up to 10 images at a time.

How to remove a ghost image safely

Follow these steps if you want the image gone for good.

  1. Take a backup of your files and database.
  2. Edit every page that uses the image and remove or replace it.
  3. Delete the file and its resized copies from the uploads folder, if they remain.
  4. Purge all caches and the CDN.
  5. Open the old image address in a private window. It should return a 404 error.

For a 404 on an image that people may still link to, you can also add a redirect. Google’s guide on redirects and Google Search explains when to use one.

Prevent confusion in future

WordPress deleted image still showing: common questions

How long does a deleted image stay visible?

As long as a cached copy exists. That can be minutes in a browser or days on some CDNs. Purging the cache removes it right away.

Does deleting from the library remove the image from my posts?

No. Posts keep the saved address. You must edit each post that used the image.

Is it bad to leave unused files on the server?

They take up space and may be reachable by their direct address. If you no longer need them, remove them after you back up.

Can I bring back an image I deleted by mistake?

If the file is still on the server, yes. Use a recovery plugin to re-add it to the library.

Conclusion

A WordPress deleted image still showing is almost always a cache, a hard-coded address, or a file that was never removed. Work through the five causes in order, and you will find the culprit within minutes.

If you removed something by accident, Media Library Recovery Pro can restore files at scale across all media types.
